For over 140 years, the Metropolitan Hotel Orange has been a beloved institution in the heart of Orange, NSW. Built in 1864 as John Woodward's store, the hotel has a rich history that reflects the growth and development of the city.
A Brief History
The city of Orange has a fascinating history that dates back to 1846, when it was proclaimed as a village. The area was previously home to the traditional Wiradjuri land owners, and the name "Blackman's Swamp" was given to the area after John Blackman, the Chief Constable of Bathurst.
The discovery of gold in the nearby towns of Ophir and Lucknow in the mid-19th century brought a massive influx of settlers to the area, and the city of Orange began to flourish. Many of Orange's historic buildings, including the Metropolitan Hotel, were built with gold rush spoils.

Poor Accommodation Experience
The majority of reviewers had a severely disappointing experience with the hotel, citing poor customer service, unclean facilities, and a lack of honesty in their advertising. Haiyan Jiang, Masouda Atah, Sahari Atah, and Aaron Anderson all gave the hotel 1-star ratings, with complaints ranging from noise disturbances to unfulfilled promises of amenities. Masouda Atah even went as far as to call the hotel a "money leach" with "rudest customer service".
Good Food and Drink
However, not everyone's experience was negative. Glen Stevenson enjoyed a great social experience at the establishment, catching up with friends whenever he's in town. The reviewer also mentioned it's a "great old pub". Liz Phillips gave a 4-star rating, praising the convenience of the location and the room itself, although she was disappointed with the food and drink service. The reviewer noted that the room was nice, but the food in the restaurant was subpar, with overcooked chips and small portions.
Satisfied Guests
On the other hand, some reviewers had a satisfactory experience. Jam Es gave a 5-star rating, praising a spell caster they found. Ole Nimeton found the place quite by accident and enjoyed the live music, efficient bar staff, and friendly atmosphere. Steven Bowden gave a 4-star rating, saying the service was friendly and the food was good, although not exceptional. The reviewer mentioned that the scotch fillet was better than the burger.
